Design engineering at Kantega

Kantega ASDesign engineering10 months

Kantega is a Norwegian consultancy. I joined in January 2026 as a design engineer in Oslo, sitting between design and code on client products.

The work is not a single branded interface. It is a series of products that have to feel considered in the browser: clear states, honest spacing, and implementations that hold up when real users arrive.

What I do there

I build and refine web interfaces with React, Next.js, and TypeScript. The brief is usually already in motion: a flow that needs to be clearer, a component that needs to survive more than one screen, a UI that looks finished in Figma and falls apart in use.

I care about the small things that make a product feel honest. Spacing, type, empty and error states, keyboard paths, and the awkward edge cases. I would rather ship fewer screens that hold together than a lot of UI that looks done and breaks on the second click.

Performance and accessibility are not a polish pass at the end. They sit in the same decisions as layout and interaction.

How the work actually happens

Kantega is cross-functional. Designers, developers, and the client sit in the same conversation. My job is to keep that conversation in the product: take intent from design, turn it into production UI, and push back when a detail will not survive implementation.

A typical stretch of work looks like this:

That loop is the job. Design engineering, not a handoff.

What I am aiming for

The products I touch at Kantega should feel like they have always been there. Fast enough to ignore, accessible enough to trust, and precise enough that the team can keep building without the UI drifting.

I am still there. This write-up will grow as the work does.

I work as a design engineer at Kantega: frontend implementation, interface craft, and the glue between design and production code.
